Saturday Dressmaking short courses – May to July – Strand House

The ultimate dress making course for beginners! 

Our short Saturday (one and two day) dressmaking courses will give you the skills and confidence to design and create your own beautiful clothes. Taking place in our well equipped Strand House studio in Thornton Heath, you’ll go step-by-step through the processes needed to get your creative stitch on!

The courses are designed for complete beginners and whilst you could enrol on just one or two of them, to get the most out of it we recommend viewing them as one, and progressing from one course to the next.

Introduction to the sewing machine

Saturday 7 May / 10 – 1pm – 1 week

Get a overview of your sewing machine and it’s main functions, how to thread, select and use different stitches and troubleshoot when needed.

Sewing basics 101

Saturday 14 May / 10 – 1pm – 1 week

Learn how to sew using different fabrics, select the right seam for the right fabric and look at other sewing tools and equipment.

Using a commercial sewing pattern

Saturday 21, 28 May / 10 – 2pm – 2 weeks

Understand how a garment is constructed using sewing pattern instructions, trace, cut and create a simple top from a shop bought pattern.

Pattern cutting: beginners 1

Saturday 18 June / 10 – 1pm – 1 weeks

Learn how to measure the body correctly, about the two different methods of pattern cutting and how to select and use the correct pattern cutting equipment. 

Pattern cutting: beginners 2 – The bodice block

Saturday 25 June / 10 – 1pm – 1 weeks

Learn how to manipulate the bodice block and use darts to create different bodice shapes and styles.

Pattern cutting: beginners 2 – The bodice block

Saturday 2 July / 10 – 1pm – 1 weeks

Learn how to manipulate the skirt block and use darts to create different skirt shapes and styles.

Make your own body block

Saturday 9, 16, 23 July / 10 – 1pm – 3 weeks

Learn how to use your own Body block to create your own garment patterns, how to manipulate a pattern block and turn body measurements into a block.
